It's Been Awhile!

So yes...its been awhile! Through out the last time I posted anything, I must say things have changed a bit! Unfortunately two of our birds died...and two got really really sick. As I thought I was going to finish raising these cuties..I turned them over to WildLife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center of Venice Florida. I was so happy that Kevin and Linda took over the raising as we had it completely wrong! Thanks to awesome people like these our birds will be able to live a nature wildlife very soon!

Well I will keep you more posted as time goes by..here's a little afterthought:

Everlasting Bubbles

Want big bubbles? Want bubbles that not only do they last a little bit longer....make them big! Here is a tutorial on How to make those bubbles with products that you have in your own home! Even though the bubbles are made with natural products, please note that it is not to be consumed!

Making Bubble Mix

While many people make bubbles out of any old detergent and water, you can get the biggest, longest lasting bubbles if you use liquid detergent and syrup. Use a mixture of Dawn (or Joy) and Karo Light Syrup. With this mixture for every 1/2 cup of liquid detergent, add about 1 tablespoon of Karo Syrup. However, the mixture can be varied a lot without affecting the bubble much.
When mixing up a batch of bubble mix you should realize that there are several sure fire bubble busters - dirt and other bubbles. You should try to make sure that the containers you are using are very clean and that you don't stir too much or too quickly, keeping the bubbles down.
Bubbles also tend to like cold air, but sometimes there is not much you can do about the temperature!

Monster Bubbles
6 cups water (Distilled is best) 3/4 cup corn syrup (Karo Light)2 cups Joy (or Dawn) dish washing liquid
Mix together. Let set 4 hours (to let bubble settle), then enjoy.
Any solution you make at home is 10 times as potent as the store-bought stuff. Vendors water it down so you always have to buy more. Here are two recipes:
12 Cups of water 1 cup Dish Soap (Buy a brand name hand dish washing soap, not dishwasher soap.) 3 tablespoons of glycerin (in lotion aisle of drug stores)
If you want to make a MUCH larger batch:
4 gallons of water in a 5 gallon bucket 6 cups of dish soap (Buy a brand name hand dish washing soap, not dishwasher soap.) 1 cup of glycerin
You can store this liquid forever and it will still work. Make a lot if you can and store it in sealable containers!

The Physics of Bubbles
Have you ever noticed that when you run water from the tap into a sink that some bubbles are formed?
These water bubbles don't last very long because the forces between water molecules tears these bubbles apart. But there is a way to reduce these forces and form bubbles - of course that means using soap.
Liquid detergents are especially good at reducing the forces between water molecules and letting bubbles form. In fact detergent molecules will cover the surface of a bubble and let it expand a great deal without breaking. A soap bubble actually is a sandwich of air on the inside, a layer of detergent molecules, a layer of water and finally another layer of detergent molecules. The inner and outer layers of detergent can stretch a great deal and the water helps hold the bubble together.
Have you ever looked very carefully at a bubble as it floats along and then pops?
Sometimes you can see reflections in a bubble, and if you look carefully you will see lots of colors swirling around on the surface of the bubble. Just before the bubble bursts some part of the bubble will look like it has lots of black swirls on it. There is a lot going on within a bubble and if you watch them carefully you will begin to understand how they are formed and how they break.
These colors and the reflection is because light is bouncing off both the inside and outside surface of the bubble. When this happens light waves from the inner and outer surfaces interfere with each other and produce brightly colored patterns. By doing the light and optics activities you can learn more about light waves and the interference of waves. Since sunlight contains a wide range of colors. Each color has a unique wavelength. You see a particular color when the surface of the bubble is just the right thickness (one quarter wavelength thick) to cause constructive interference for a a particular color. But when the surface of the bubble gets very thin the light destructively interferes and you see mostly black.

Tips With Everyday Products!

Being a mom not only has been rewarding also its fun on how you find out how some of your products that you already have are great cleaning products! And if you're like me that I have allergies like crazy...you would greatly appreciate non-chemical cleaning tips!

Tip #1

Peroxide

Such a great product for not only cuts, great for whiter teeth,

great mouthwash

(10 minutes at a time).

Clean your counters, table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leavea fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters-Truth!

After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it tokill salmonella and other bacteria-Truth

You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load ofwhites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pourdirectly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it andrinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

Use as a vegetable wash or soak to kill bacteria and neutralize chemicals

Clean with hydrogen peroxide when your house becomes a biohazardafter its invaded by toxic mold, such as those with water damage.

So you see you don't have to use chemicals that not only is expensive but bad for your health! This is one way of saving money, time and health.

Everyone out there...there is this new law called the Consumer Protection Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) signed into law August 14, 2008, and the ramifications it will have when it goes into effect February 10, 2009 (now being popularly referred to as National Bankruptcy Day).

CPSIA was necessary in principle and has noble intentions, keeping our children safe and holding companies accountable for importing toxic toys. We all demand safety for our children and this is the intent of CPSIA; specifically to ensure safe levels of lead and phthalates in all products manufactured for children under the age of 12. Unfortunately this legislation lacks common sense, is ambiguous and fails to take into account the handmade industry including those who sell on Ebay and Etsy!

There is no distinction between big, small, or even micro one-person businesses. Whether it’s a large-scale manufacturer importing apparel to be sold in big box stores, or a work-at-home mom (WAHM) selling customs on ebay, the legislation applies the same to all.

Unit testing will be required on finished products, regardless if the components are natural materials or if you have documentation from a vendor stating that buttons, for example, are certified lead-free. As it stands, H.R. 4040 fails to recognize that textile products are inherently lead-free. Why then is an organic cotton shirt being tested for lead exactly?

Unit testing is extremely cost prohibitive to small business, but worse, it is unnecessary. In fact, it is completely redundant if the components that comprise the whole have already been tested and due diligence can prove they meet the guidelines.

Small manufacturers have no way of absorbing the price of such redundancy. And all manufacturers will be required to test a finished component/item from each batch. Easy to do in mass production—simply pull one sample from a lot of thousands. But how does one comply when your “batches” are made-to-order batches of one? SKUs will also be required for each product with a permanent label on the item itself.

CPSIA will be retroactive and takes a guilty-until-proven-innocent approach with extremely hefty fines for violators. As written, any product used by children 12 and under (such as toys, footwear, carpets, clothing, bedding, luggage, lamps, toys, books, magazines, baseball cards, consumer electronics, school supplies, office supplies, jewelry, housewares, sports equipment and so on) without the newly required certification would be deemed hazardous, whether the item poses an actual threat or not. So on February 10, 2009, any unsold merchandise (in big box stores, the corner boutique, your fabric stash, Good Will donations, etc.) will be deemed “hazardous goods” and illegal to sell unless 3rd party testing proves otherwise. By the way, there are only 14 said labs currently in the United States.

Think you won’t be affected? I hope not, but the sad truth is that hundreds of thousands (if not millions) will be. Do you make children’s clothing, toys, jewelry, hair bows, accessories, furniture, artwork or anything else “intended for use by children age 12 and under”? Are you a retailer of children’s goods? Do you resell used children’s clothing or toys on ebay? Do you participate or shop at craft fairs? Do you donate used children’s items to needy organizations? Do you belong to a church that has rummage sales as a fundraiser? Does your child play sports and get their uniforms from a local screen print shop? Are you a consumer shopping for alternatives to mass-produced toys? If so, this law takes away that freedom.

Surely this legislation can be amended by incorporating some common sense and still make it possible to ensure our children’s safety without further hurting the US economy. According to the 2002 Economic Census (the last survey of its type), small U.S. clothing manufacturers (with fewer than 20 employees) contribute over $900 million dollars [consider: nearly $1 billion dollars] annually to the economy and comprise 68% of total apparel manufacturing in the U.S. This is clearly a vital and contributing asset to our economy. Multiply this fallout exponentially when you take into account the myriad other manufacturers, retailers and businesses that will be hurt or ultimately driven out of business.

So, why should you support amending this legislation?

Because the CPSIA isn’t fair and will not function as written. It inadvertently punishes American industries unrelated to toys and will ultimately result in fewer alternatives to mass produced merchandise made in China. The concept that small producers should be subject to the same rigorous standards but with lesser regulation (and common sense) has already been fought for and sustained in the food industry, which is why your local farmers market still exists. Now this same idea needs to be applied to children’s products.
